AI Integration in MuleSoft: Essential Tools and Capabilities
One thought always comes in my mind that how often we hesitate to dive into new technologies. We might think it’s not the right time, it’s not relevant, or we have other reasons to delay.
But the future isn’t waiting for us to catch up. It’s happening now.
That’s why I’m sharing this article — to highlight some exciting tools and features you might not yet know about but can start exploring today to stay ahead.

Anypoint Code Builder
One year ago, I wrote an article about this fantastic tool (Initial observations Post GA), and it has since made significant progress. During the past year, Anypoint Code builder was improved with:
Configuration Panel
External VCS Support
Project Creation vis Templates/Samples
Support for Existing MUnit Tests
Dataweave Expression Builder
AsyncAPI Support (Open Beta)
Multiple Runtimes and Java 17
Governance Rulesets for API Design
Custom Java Support
Einstein GA
The most exciting addition is Einstein, which brings generative AI directly into MuleSoft’s ecosystem. With Einstein, IT and business teams can build integrations and automations faster by using natural language prompts — just like interacting with LLMs such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Isn’t that exciting? Einstein is fully integrated into your code integration tools, making it much easier to leverage AI for development — and it’s already in GA! Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
Looking ahead, more updates are scheduled for release in October 2024, with additional enhancements to follow.
Intelligent Document Processing
Powered by Einstein, Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) automates the entire document lifecycle using AI. Available through the Anypoint Platform, IDP helps you extract and structure data from documents quickly and efficiently.
To get started, you create and publish document actions — multi-step processes that use AI to scan documents, extract fields, and return structured data in JSON format. Each extracted field includes a confidence score indicating the accuracy of the extraction. For example, a score of 100% means perfect accuracy, while a score of 75% means there’s a 25% chance the extracted value might be incorrect.
If the confidence score falls below a defined threshold, the document is flagged for human review. Reviewers — individuals or teams — validate the data to ensure accuracy.
You can also configure natural language prompts to enhance data extraction. Once a document action is published, it can be executed, and the results can be retrieved in Anypoint Studio via the IDP Runtime Service API connector, which is automatically generated and available for download from Anypoint Exchange. MuleSoft ensures everything is ready for easy development.
IDP continues to improve, with the recent release adding full support for Spanish and German as of August 23rd, 2024.
RPA (Robotic Process Automation)
As of July 2023, MuleSoft RPA is integrated with Anypoint Platform, unifying login experiences and supporting external identity providers (IdP).
MuleSoft RPA automates repetitive tasks, streamlining processes and reducing errors caused by manual input. When combined with AI, RPA evolves into Intelligent Automation — capable of handling more complex workflows, such as processing unstructured data, making decisions based on patterns, and adapting to dynamic environments.
Some of the most common use cases for RPA include:
Data Extraction and Entry: Automatically extract data from files (PDFs, CSVs, etc.) and integrate it with other systems.
Payroll Processing: Automate payroll data entry and validation across multiple systems.
Price Comparisons: Automate monitoring of supplier and competitor prices.
Refund Processing: Speed up customer refund requests.
Customer Information Updates: Automatically update customer information in systems that don’t have APIs and must be accessed via the UI.
MuleSoft RPA includes several applications to manage your automation projects:
RPA Manager: A cloud-based control plane integrated with Anypoint Platform to manage automations, design processes, and monitor deployments.
RPA Builder: An on-premise tool to build and test automations locally before uploading them to RPA Manager.
RPA Recorder: A tool that automatically captures user actions, generating process diagrams to assist with automation creation.
RPA Bot: On-premise software bots that execute assigned automations, handling tasks like reading text and interacting with applications.
What’s Next for MuleSoft and AI?
The integration of AI into MuleSoft’s tools is just the beginning. From Einstein making development smarter and faster to Intelligent Document Processing improving accuracy, MuleSoft is showing how AI can truly transform integration and automation. By leveraging AI, developers and business teams can avoid repetitive, tedious tasks and instead focus on high-value, creative work.
As MuleSoft continues to push the boundaries with AI in tools like RPA and Anypoint Code Builder, we can expect even more exciting advancements soon. Imagine a world where integration flows are built in seconds with simple prompts, documents are processed with near-perfect accuracy, and bots can adapt to dynamic environments on their own.
With the October 2024 updates around the corner and MuleSoft constantly improving, it’s hard not to feel excited about what’s coming next. AI is unlocking new possibilities, and MuleSoft is at the forefront — giving us the tools to build the future we’ve only begun to imagine.
